statues whispering1DMs on Twitter are Direct Messages. If you are tweeting generally then all of your tweets are out in the open and can be seen by your followers in their timeline (and they can also come up on Google searches too).

Direct messages (DMs) let you send your contacts private messages through Twitter. The only people who will see a DM are you and the person you are sending the DM to. You can’t DM everyone – In fact, you can only send a DM to a Twitter user that is following you (and you don’t have to be following them).

Also, direct messages are limited to 140 characters just like normal tweets. We find them particularly handy when you are having a conversation and maybe you want to talk price or someone is asking for your address and contact details.
