MB-logoAs you may be aware, Nicky, the MD of Padua Communications has had a baby. You may have seen her in the August edition of Mother & Baby magazine. She is mentioned in a feature about having a baby in your 20s, 30s and 40s, but there is no mention of the new baby (who was born on the 30th of June).  This is because of the lead times of this PR opportunity as it arose and we thought it might be useful to demonstrate how the timings for getting media coverage like this happens.

Originally a request seen on Twitter in May, Nicky sent some details to the features of editor in May and then had a 20 minute interview at the beginning of June. A photo had to be sorted within 24 hours that would fit the piece. The issue of the magazine is the August edition but this (as with a lot of monthly magazines) went on sale the month before, in this case in July.

When you are trying to get some media coverage, be aware of the timings that are involved with publications. You need to plan well ahead to pitch in your comments and details – for a monthly publication you are looking at a minimum of 3-4 months. But if you can, work with as much time as possible so you can find out what angles the feature will cover, what the journalist is really hoping to mention and that you give yourself as much time as possible to prepare.

You can read our blog post on deadlines and timings here and if you are using an agency to help you with your media outreach, make sure they are giving you as much notice as possible. There are always last minute queries and for online and daily publications in particular, you won’t get much notice. If you know there are opportunities you will always be happy to comment on, why not create some content that is all ready to go for scenarios that have tight deadlines.

If you’re really not sure where to start, give us a ring and we’ll see if we can get you started with some messaging and opportunities for as little as £600.

This includes searching for some opportunities for you and working with you on a number of key messages. Email us at hello@paduacommunications.com or ring us on 0203 272 7570.
